“I am already to be sacrificed and at this moment I remember how the Lord reached me. Already the time of my departure has arrived. Am I afraid to die? Yes, I have it, but with a clear conscience I can say that I have fought a good battle. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Certainly, my encounter with the Lord on the road to Damascus was decisive; from there, many things changed in my life; but it was not as simple to change course as it seems. There I was, on the floor, pulled by the horse; I asked: “Who are you Lord?” And he answered me: “I am Jesus, whom you persecute. Now get up, go into the city and you will be told what to do “(Ac 9,5-6).
Because of the glory of God I was blinded, I could not see, I was very confused. At that moment, I was taken by the hand to Damascus, I spent three days without seeing, without eating or drinking. There began a long and slow process of reflection in the scriptures and attempting to discover the divine will in daily events.
The Christian community of Damascus and later that of Antioch helped me, protected me from those of my nation; Although many still felt distrust, they could not believe that I, who was their most feared persecutor, would suddenly begin to announce salvation through Jesus as well.
Ananias was the first to guide me. I still remember his words: “Saul, my brother, the Lord Jesus has sent me to you, the same one who appeared to you on the way, so that you can recover your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit”. Immediately I was baptized in the name of Jesus.
Very soon I began to preach in the synagogues, and the difficulties also came, the persecution of those of my nation. Later I went to Arabia and after three years I went up to Jerusalem to meet Pedro (Gal 1,18), followed, I went to the regions of Syria and Cilicia, where there were two very important cities for me: Antioch, from which later he would undertake the first missionary trip in the company of Barnabas, and Tarsus, my hometown. Approximately fourteen long years passed, before launching myself fully into the mission.
Now the Lord has affirmed me and I can say that “Everything that I had as an advantage and privilege I judge as trash because of my Lord Jesus. Now, I do not mean that I have reached perfection, but I continued my career wanting to reach my goal, and forgetting what I left behind I threw myself to what was ahead, running firmly towards the goal, to the prize that God called me from the high in Christ Jesus “(Phil 3,7.12-14).
They’re coming for me ……, they’re here!
